Dense forests, spectacular waterfalls, glacial lakes, and towering peaks: an astonishing diversity of landscapes will accompany your road trip through the heart of the Black Forest. Embark on the famous Black Forest High Road to discover them and create unforgettable memories.

Stages 1 and 2 – From Baden-Baden to Mount Merkur: relaxation, culture and enchanting landscapes

Your road trip through the heart of the Black Forest begins in the best way possible in Baden-Baden: a wellness break at the famous Caracalla Thermal Spa or the Friedrichsbad. A unique and incredibly soothing experience in legendary thermal baths, blending modernity with ancient Roman traditions.

After this timeless interlude, head to the Museum Frieder Burda: located in the heart of the charming Lichtentaler Allee park, this architectural gem, bathed in light, houses an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art.

Next, make your way to Mount Merkur. Take the longest funicular railway in Germany to the summit and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of Baden-Baden, the Rhine Valley and the Vosges to the west, and the Murg Valley to the east.

Step 3 – The Black Forest High Road: breathtaking viewpoints

For the next stage, take the Black Forest High Road, which winds at altitudes around 1,000 metres. Take your time to stop at the many viewpoints along the cliffside sections to enjoy breathtaking panoramas. The road leads you to Mummelsee, a small glacial lake with dark waters nestled in the mountains.

💡
Good to know

Mummelsee Lake is a great starting point for a hike to Hornisgrinde, the highest peak in the northern Black Forest.

Stages 4 to 6 – From Gengenbach to Lake Titisee: between picturesque villages and untamed nature

Continue your road trip with a stop at Gengenbach, a charming village offering a journey back in time with its half-timbered houses, cobbled streets and picturesque setting. For an authentic experience, try a workshop on making traditional black bread with local bakers. Don’t miss the chance to climb the Kinzigtor Tower for a panoramic view over Gengenbach and its surroundings.

Next, head to Triberg, a lovely little town known for its famous cuckoo clocks and its impressive waterfalls, the highest in Germany. Hiking enthusiasts can take the Waterfall Trail (1.5 hours round trip) to enjoy a unique spectacle of wild nature and majestic waterfalls.

The next stop brings you to Lake Titisee, a peaceful haven surrounded by lush hills. Activities include relaxing by the water, taking a refreshing swim or enjoying a boat ride. This small lake is simply perfect for a rejuvenating and soothing moment, at the heart of unspoiled nature.

Stages 7 to 10 – From Feldberg to Schauinsland: between history and local charm

For the final stages of your road trip, enjoy walks that combine history and nature. Start by exploring Feldberg, the highest peak in the Black Forest. Overlooking the region, this imposing mountain offers exceptional panoramas and hikes through an authentic surrounding landscape.

Next, head to Todtnau, 55 kilometres from Feldberg. Here, you’ll admire the famous Todtnau Waterfalls, nestled in a well-preserved natural setting. A total immersion in the nature of the Black Forest!

After this bucolic moment, head towards Fribourg, a charming university town with a reconstructed medieval old town and picturesque little streams. The journey takes you through small villages, so be mindful of speed limits! Once you arrive, be sure to visit the Freiburger Münster, the city’s iconic Gothic cathedral, renowned worldwide. Take time to wander down Konviktstraße, Fribourg’s most beautiful shopping street, explore the lively cathedral square market, or discover the Klein Venedig district (Little Venice). Also, don’t forget to indulge in local culinary specialties offered in the restaurants or markets, such as the “Black Forest” cake with cherries, Lange Rote im Weckle (grilled sausage in a bun), or Spätzle, to name just a few.

End your road trip with a must-see: the ascent of Schauinsland (also accessible by cable car). Up there, a spectacular view of the Rhine Valley and the Black Forest awaits. This final panorama marks the end of your adventure in this magnificent region. Enjoy every minute!
