All that remains of the vast 12C Romanesque sanctuary is the imposing crypt, built in 1130 and comprising three naves resting on enormous pillars. The current cathedral, built of pink granite, was completed in 1876, and its Romanesque Revival style attempts to be as faithful as possible to the original building. Note the series of frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible, painted by Joakim Skovgaard in the early 20C.
