Södermalm, the southern island, is the capital's largest island. Once a working-class stronghold, it is enjoying a new lease of life: an artsy-hipster contingent is injecting a pleasant atmosphere with trendy cafés and restaurants, parks and designers' shops and avant-garde galleries. South of Folkungagatan, streets renamed "SoFo" feel like a Baltic version of New York City. "Söder" is also renowned for providing the backdrop for Steig Larsen's Millennium trilogy, parts of which were set here.
