"Holstein Switzerland" is a natural park of hilly upland set amid a patchwork of lakes and forest. At its centre, Plön sits on the shores of the largest of the lakes that are scattered over this region between Kiel and the Bay of Lübeck. The castle terrace affords a panoramic view over the surrounding lakes. Farther to the east, Eutin, the birthplace of composer Karl Maria von Weber, still boasts a number of 17C brick buildings. Its moated castle is set in an English-style garden.
