Eastern State Penitentiary
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
A visit to the Eastern State Penitentiary, near Philadelphia, is interesting on more than one count. This disused prison, a monument of 19C architecture, is the symbol of successful heritage safeguarding, as well as a fascinating account of the history of the theory of incarceration. You will see the yards, corridors, hospital, places of worship of the different faiths, and a few cells restored to their original state - including Al Capone's luxury cell.
