At the centre of this giant rocky crater stands the sombre cone of Mount Batur (1 717m), out of which an almost constant wisp of smoke rises. As soon as the sun begins to dawn, the outline of Mount Rinjani and the coast of Lombok Island can be discerned in the distance, poised between sea and mist, while in the foreground (slightly to the right), the peaks of the Abang and Agung seem superimposed. Below, clouds sometimes float on the lake, shrouding its contours in mist.
