The Michelin Guide's review
After the Barbarian invasions, Maria Saal monastery was the first step in the re-evangelisation of Carantania - the name of Carinthia between the 8 and 9C. Built near the former Roman city of Virunum, it was here that Saint Modest, the founder of the monastery in the second half of the 8C, preached. The actual building standing here today was built in the 15C and makes for an impressive sight.
