The 100km-long Kiel Canal links the North Sea to the Baltic, from Brunsbüttle to Kiel. It was opened in 1895 by Wilhelm II. The Holtenau locks enable it connect it to the Baltic. Of all the bridges spanning the canal, those most worth seeing are the Rendsburg viaduct railway, Hochbrücke Grünental and Hochbrücke Hochdonn.
