Baptistery of Fréjus
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This building, square on the outside and octagonal inside, is topped with a dome dating from the early 20C; it is one of the oldest baptisteries in France (5C). Inside, digs have restored the original marble floor. The bishop would have washed the feet of those being baptised in the terracotta pool (dolium) before they were immersed in the pool in the centre of the baptistery.
