Carisbrooke Castle
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This castle was built in 1100 by Richard de Redvers, purchased by Edward I in 1293, attacked by the French in the 14C, fortified in the late 16C to withstand the Spanish, and used to imprison Charles I from 1647 to 1648, events which explain its mix of architectural styles. Visit the private apartments, the keep, with its impressive views, the great hall with its museum on the history of the Isle of Wight, and the Old Coach House, home to an exhibition on the castle.
