The Michelin Guide's review
This 265-acre arboretum and research/educational facility is run by Harvard University and the Department of Parks and Recreation. Founded in 1872, the arboretum has evolved into a living museum of about 7,000 species of ornamental trees and shrubs. The place is especially beautiful in May and June when the delicate scents of blooming lilacs, azaleas, rhododendrons and magnolias fill the air. This leafy preserve is also the final resting place of many 19C luminaries, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes and "Battle Hymn of the Republic" author Julia Ward Howe. Maps are available at the guardhouse.
