Formed by a single volcano, Lanai boasts stretches of white sandy beaches and pine-shrouded mountaintops. Lanai was once the world's largest pineapple plantation; Lanai City was built in 1924 by the Hawaiian Pineapple Company. When market demand plummeted in the 1990s, Lanai turned to high-end tourism. Most of the island was purchased in 2012 by California software billionaire Larry Ellison, who has vowed to make Lanai a model of sustainability with wind and solar power.
