Several centuries of cohabitation between Romanians, Hungarians, Serbs and Germans have naturally left their mark here, most notably in Timisoara, the regional "capital", but also in its villages which retain a strong cultural identity. Lovers of unspoiled natural scenery and winter sports will appreciate the Semenic mountains dotted with ski resorts, and the Danube gorges, renowned for the spectacular Iron Gates.
