The Michelin Guide's review
The first trees in the arboretum were planted in 1829 by par Robert Halford. Since then, the vast collection of plants has developed and now includes around 14,000 trees and bushes from the four corners of the earth. The Forestry Commission conducts considerable research here. Some of the trees here are the largest of their kind in Britain. The many varieties of maple trees mean the autumn brings a fantastic spectacle.
