World-renowned for its collections of bronzes, ceramics and paintings, the Shanghai Museum exhibits 120 000 works covering four millennia. It also showcases superb sculptures and calligraphy and has a gallery devoted to the art of ethnic minorities. The interior of the building (1994) is a manifesto of Chinese cosmogony: a square base symbolising the earth and a round roof representing heaven.
