The Michelin Guide's review
Abutting the citadel, this basilica which honours St John was commissioned by Emperor Justinian (6C). Upon his return from exile in Patmos, the apostle wrote his Book of Revelations and died here. The remains of St John's basilica provide an insight into early Byzantine churches with three naves and a transept enclosed by the apse. Its cupolas are more emblematic of future trends in religious architecture.
