After the Civil War, the city celebrated its renaissance with the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition in 1897. A full-sized replica of the Parthenon was built for the occasion. In 1990, a statue of Athena, measuring 45ft in height and created using a mix of plaster and glass fibre, then covered with 17lb of gold leaf, was added.
