Below the town, this masterpiece by Sangallo the Elder was inaugurated in 1529 by Pope Clement VII. Influenced by Bramante's plans for the reconstruction of St Peter's, the edifice takes up the idea of a central plan in the form of a Greek cross topped by a dome. The harmony of line and mastery of the architectural motifs create a sense of abundance.
