The Michelin Guide's review
Cantal has no lack of puys or puechs (volcanic hills) but there is only one "plomb"! Its name is said to come from the Latin pomum (pommel), but the locals now refer to it as the "fist". It is the highest point of the Cantal range (1,855m/6,086ft). To reach the top, take the cable car from the Lioran ski resort. The view from the viewing table at the top is superb. Paths lead to the puy Gros or, via Tombe-du-Père pass, to the site of Prat-de-Bouc.
