Kencho-ji is the first and largest Kamakura Zen temple, and was created in the 13C by a Chinese priest who came to spread Zen teachings in Japan. Of most interest is the Bonsho Bell (1255), a designated National Treasure. Opposite the Sanmon, you can admire the junipers, which are more than 700 years old. The Butsuden has an unusual image of Jizo Bosatsu, protector of criminals. The Hatto's showpiece is a ceiling painted by Koizumi Junsaku. As for the pond, designed by Muso Soseki (1275-1351), its shape is modelled on the ideogram for "spirit".
