The complex of Eyüp stands on the banks of the Golden Horn. The site honours Eyüp Ensari, the companion of the Prophet. The spectacle of popular fervour and the profusion of religious boutiques are perhaps more striking than the gigantic early 19C mosque that now stands here. Suitably attired, it is worth peeping into the vast prayer hall. In the cemetery, admire the tomb of Eyüp, the gem of the site, before climbing the hill to the Pierre Loti cafe, a place of literary pilgrimage in its own right.
