The Michelin Guide's review
This gigantic dam was built between 1955 and 1971 to prevent flooding by the North Sea spreading too far inland along the estuary and to control the flow of the Meuse and the Rhine rivers. Some 5km/3mi long, the dam is equipped with 17 sluice gates to help maintain the balance between fresh and salt water. A navigation lock has been created to the south, near the small harbour.
